Funeral Costs Explained

We are always here to help you at your time of need. We will talk everything through with you in full, and offer a free consultation with no obligation for both funerals and our funeral plans.

Funeral costs are split into 2 parts, and we will clearly display these charges on all our estimates.

Those charges made by Pope Funeral Services for the services we provide,

Third Party or Disbursement charges.  These are things we pay for on your behalf.

Please see below for examples of these charges.

Pope Funeral Services Fees

  • Bringing the deceased into our care

When you contact us, our professional and friendly team will attend and move the deceased person back to our chapel of rest.  We will do so with your needs and requests in mind, and you can help us or be in attendance if you wish.  We can also arrange to bring a deceased person back home should this be your wish.

  • Care of the deceased

You can choose whether the deceased person is to be dressed in their own clothes, or you may feel that one of our gowns would be more suitable.  We can also arrange for personal items to be placed in the coffin and will give you the best advice in terms of coming to visit and spending time in the chapel of rest.

  • Your choice of coffin

We offer a range of coffins that are all either a high quality wood veneer or solid wood.  Further, we can source personalised coffins featuring favourite images, pastimes or hobbies.  Your funeral director will explain the differences to enable you to make the right choice for you.

  • The use of the chapel of rest

Whether you wish to visit the chapel of rest or not, we will always ensure that we look after the person who has passed away, as if they were a member of our own family.  Our chapel of rest is open from Monday – Friday from 9am-5pm and you can also visit outside these hours with an appointment.

  • A traditional motorised Hearse

Regularly serviced and maintained to the highest standards, our funeral vehicles are befitting of a traditional funeral service.  We can also arrange for a horse drawn hearse, or alternative modes of transport if you feel that would be a more suitable choice.

  • Limousines for mourners if required

Our limousines can transport 6 passengers.  Alternatively, if you wish to use your own cars that is fine too.

  • Our professional services for arranging and conducting the funeral

From start to finish, you will always receive a dedicated, professional and friendly service from each of our team members.  From completion of all the paperwork that will allow the funeral to go ahead, to liaising with clergy, creating newspaper notices and service sheets, booking the funeral service itself, looking after you at the chapel of rest and conducting the service with a full compliment of staff, our team will support you and your family whenever you need us.

    Frequently asked questions

We will always provide a full written estimate of the funeral costs, and we ask you to sign this at the time of the funeral arrangements.

When we provide you with a written estimate, we will also be able to advise you of the amount you need to pay prior to the funeral taking place.  As a guide, we normally ask for the third party costs to be paid in full prior to the funeral taking place.

The fee for our Traditional funeral service, which is our most flexible option, allowing you to add lots of personal touches is £2,645.00.  This includes; bringing the deceased into our care, the use of the chapel of rest, the Arley coffin (which is oak veneer) a motorised Hearse and our professional fees for arranging and conducting the funeral.  Third party costs (which are circa £1200.00 for a cremation) need to be added to our charges to arrive at the total funeral cost.

We offer a free consultation on all funerals and funeral plans so we recommend that you get in touch and we will talk everything through with you.

For a funeral service at a local crematorium where a minister of religion or a civil celebrant takes the service, and where doctors fees are payable, the third party charges are approximately £1200.00.

When the funeral service is to be a burial, the costs can vary widely, depending on whether you already own a burial plot.  It’s better to speak to us directly so we are able to provide an accurate cost for you.

A notice in the local newspaper is from £80.00 (this depends on the size of the notice).

Our online obituaries are provided free of charge.

In certain circumstances, the Department for Work and Pensions will  provide financial assistance towards the funeral costs .  The person who is arranging the funeral and is responsible for the funeral costs must be in receipt of certain benefits for the claim to be successful.

It is important to note that  successful claims are only a contribution towards the funeral costs, and in the majority of cases, the family still have a bill to pay.

Yes, we do offer a simple funeral service.  The simple funeral offers less choice than our Traditional Funeral.  We will choose the day and time of the funeral, you can visit the chapel of rest during office hours,  and the service will be either at the cemetery or crematorium only. If it’s a cremation, the ashes will be returned to you after the service.  The simple funeral option costs £2,445.00 and third party fees (which are approximately £1200.00) need to be added to our costs.

Yes, there are restrictions.

  • You can still use the chapel of rest, but this is restricted to office hours only (Monday – Friday 9am until 5pm)
  • We will choose the day and time of the funeral (it will usually be earlier or later in the day)
  • The service will be either at the crematorium or cemetery (no church service prior)
  • We ask that you pay for the funeral prior to it taking place
